The Japanese Diet

It is known that Japanese men and women live longer than any one else on the earth, having one of the lowest obesity rate. This phenomenon is not related to their genes, because studies have shown that Japanese who follow western lifestyle put on weight easily, developing obesity factors.

Japanese food habits play an important role,so far as their longevity and their ability to stay slim and trim is concerned. The main principle of their diet is about eating plenty of fish, fruits and vegetables, eat more of low calorie foods, serve in smaller portions and eat slowly and mindfully. A wide variety of food in smaller quantity ensures all the nutrients that are needed by the body, giving also to the brain enough time to realize that the stomach is full.

The Japanese eating rules include less energy dense foods (foods that lesser calories per gram), such as vegetables, fruits, soups as compared to western diets that provide more energy dense food.

The cooking process destroys valuable vitamins and minerals.

Pay attention to the visual aspect of the meals, decorating them by using bright colored vegetables

The visual appeal of the meals has also a primary importance, as they “have to be eaten through the eyes”, meaning that there will be get more satisfaction by paying attention to presentation, being less hungry as a result.

There are some essential rules of Japanese practices with regards to eating meals:

  • Allow a certain time period for your meal, in order to eat slowly,enjoying each morsel as you gulp it down.
  • While eating, try to focuses on the meals, avoiding any external disturbance, such as mobile phones, TV, etc
  • Pay attention to the visual aspect of the meals, decorating them by using bright colored vegetables
  • Choose wide variety of low calorie food served in smaller amounts;
  • Replace red meat with fish.
