With winter approaching quickly flu jabs are in high demand and supermarkets are stocking up their shelves with medicines. But there are better ways to combat flu, simply by strengthening your immune system. Follow our Top 4 Tips to prevent flu!
Tip 1: Hygiene
Flu spreads from person to person, therefore wash your hands regularly (some
antibacterial soaps can destroy the skins natural defences!) and avoid touching mouth, nose and eyes.
Keep your house and workspace clean, but remember that exaggerated use of chemical
household products can weaken your body's ability to defend itself.
Ill colleagues should avoid coming in the office and spreading illness. Work from
home if you can.
Tip 2: Nutrition
A fresh and balanced diet has a major impact on a person's immune system.
Include immune-enhancing foods such as
o Organic meats, poultry and dairy
o Fruits and vegetables (different colours as these include different nutrients)
o Probiotics yoghurts
o Natural vitamins (or supplements if not possible) such as vitamin C, e.g. drink hot
lemon juice or enjoy a kiwi - both are rich of vitamins
o Use healing herbs and spices as cooking flavours or teas e.g. horseradish, oregano,
elderberry, garlic or ginger.
o Drink 2-3 litres a day to flush out your system and rehydrate. Be careful drinks
containing caffeine and alcohol dehydrate!
Tip 3: Lifestyle
Consistent and adequate sleep (7-8 hours, ideally starting before midnight) is
important for a balanced immune system.
Stress has a negative impact on your immune system and should be limited or dealt
with efficiently:
o Relaxing sessions in the sauna are believed to strengthen your body's defences.
o Meditation or relaxation and regular me-time can reduce the negative impact of stress
that damages your immune system
Smokers are more prone to infections, so this is a good time to stop smoking.
Aerobic exercises help increase the body's natural defences, but don't exert yourself
when not used to exercise to avoid physical stress.
Tip 4: Positive attitude
A positive attitude towards your body and belief that you can get through the winter
without a cold are critical for staying healthy.
Strengthening your immune system can reduce your risk of becoming ill with flu and also decrease strength and duration should you still catch it. You don't have to turn into a saint of healthy living, but try to follow some of the suggestions above you find easier to improve your health and wellbeing!
